Don't forget to "purple up" on April, 15 2015.

That is the day Operation Military Kids is asking South Dakotans to wear something purple to show your support for Military Kids in our state.

Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, according to Sheila Snyder, the SDSU Extension Operation Military Kids State Coordinator.

Snyder says, "OMK's goal is to have a sea of purple all across our state on April 15th, as a tangible salute to these remarkable kids."

Governor Dennis Daugaard will be asked to sign the Executive Proclamation again this year, making April the Month of the Military Child in South Dakota in 2015.

Operation Military Kids will be sending out a letter of its own asking all Mayors' Offices across the state to declare a city-wide proclamation pronouncing April 15th, 2015 "Purple Up" for Military Kids Day.

"It's a great way for all of us to show our support for the various military kids in our communities who have have faced many challenges and struggles while their parent has been deployed," according to Snyder.

South Dakota has a huge presence of Air Force, Air Guard, Army National Guard, Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, and even active component Service Members from each of the Armed Forces Components.

With every service member, comes a family - spouse or children, mom and dad, brothers and sisters, they all make up that community of military families.

According to Snyder, South Dakota has roughly 7,500 military kids in our state.

The Month of the Military Child is a month long celebration of our brave military kids that began in the early 1980's. It's designed to thank, honor, and recognize their contributions to our country as a member of a military family.
