I don't know why shows, movies, and documentaries about kidnappings and murder interest me so much.

I really don't think it's because I have a morbid, twisted view on the world, I think it's because it's a different perspective on the human condition. I never, in my life, have ever thought about harming another person in these ways, so to me it is unfathomable.

Then on the other side, I like the survival part of it. I like hearing how these 'victims' found a way out and somehow picked themselves up and moved on.

The latest movie to catch my eye is Room. It is based on the 2010 book of the same name. However, I didn't know it was a book until I saw the movie.

Anyway, it is the story of a woman and her child who are held captive in 'room' for years. Seven years for her and all of the little boy's 5 years have been in this 'room.'

Finally, after his 5th birthday she decides to try to explain to her son what is going on and how there is more to life than the room they are stuck in.

She forms a plan for escape and then things get really good.

This movie was full of suspense and it really showed how relationships after an event like this can be hard to mend. Most of the movie and book, from what I'm told, are from the boy's perspective. He's five and learning everything for the first time. He had never seen a tree in real life before. Could you imagine?

The movie has been nominated for many awards this awards season.

Check out the trailer here. It was in limited release and just made its way to Sioux Falls last week.
