Two blocks of busy streets need to be refurbished as part of the Louise Avenue project, which will require an overnight closure to complete.

It’s near the busiest intersection in Sioux Falls and this extreme measure is necessary for Louise Avenue from 41st Street to 43rd Street for closure to traffic. Civil Engineer Dustin Posten says crews need time and room to prepare for a new surface that will happen in phases over consecutive nights from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM Monday June 12 and Tuesday June 13.

“That will allow the contractor to get in there and mill that existing asphalt section. The following night they will come back and pave it plus get the (pavement) marking down. By doing that at night it allows us to limit the impacts to traffic and hopefully limit the impacts to businesses. (Considering the traffic) we’d rather not be doing that during the day.”

The area that’s closed overnight appears to be a temporary fix as the rest of the Louise Avenue upgrade to the south is concrete. Posten says that area close to 41st Street will be targeted for concrete later.

“That is part of a future project for 41st Street off a little bit in the distance. We’re putting back what’s there to make sure we have a good surface to drive on through there.”

Vehicle traffic has switched to the new concrete surface on the west side of Louise Avenue from 43rd Street all the way to 49th Street.

The closure of 49th Street at Louise Avenue was reopened about a month ahead of schedule. Expected completion date of the Louise Avenue project is in mid-November.
