The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that they have hired University of North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol.

Hakstol has been the head coach of North Dakota for 11 seasons. During his time in Grand Forks, he has a coaching record of 289-141-43 and took North Dakota to the post-season each year. Hakstol has led his squad to seven NCAA Frozen Fours, and was the runner-up in 2004-2005. This past season, North Dakota went 29-10-3 before losing to Boston University in the NCAA Frozen Four.

Philadelphia decided to remove Craig Berube after two seasons. Berube led the Flyers to the playoffs in his first year, but was knocked out in the first round. This season, Philadelphia finished with a disappointing 33-31-18 record and missed the playoffs by ten games.

Hakstol takes over for a team that has won the Stanley Cup twice in history (1973-1974, 1974-1975). The Flyers have not made the Stanley Cup Finals since 2009-2010.
