Last year, Lewis Drug had plans to move into the old Copper Lounge location in downtown Sioux Falls. Those plans were put on hold when the Copper Lounge building tragically collapsed on December 2, 2016. The buildings collapse ended up claiming the life of 24-year-old Ethan McMahon, a construction worker from Sioux Falls.

Now 10 months after the collapse, plans to open the downtown Lewis Drug location are back on.

KSFY TV is reporting that Lewis Drug has agreed to team up with Sanford Health and PAve to occupy the old Copper Lounge site at 10th Street and Phillips Avenue.

According to KSFY TV, the new downtown Lewis Drug will anchor a 12,000-square-foot building that is scheduled to be completed during the spring of 2018.

Nikki Griffin, Lewis Drug corporate vice president told SiouxFalls.Business “Everyone involved in the project has been focused on honoring the history of the site while keeping pace with the progress of downtown Sioux Falls. We’re proud to work with great partners on this project and aspire to create a space that celebrates the strength of our community and the continued growth of downtown.”

The new Lewis store will actually be somewhat of a trip back in time for Lewis Drug. The very first Lewis pharmacy opened on Phillips Avenue 75 years ago in Sioux Falls. The brand new downtown location promises to feature a mix of merchandise according to SiouxFalls.Business that will be tailored to downtown residents and workers.

In addition to the Lewis store, SiouxFalls.Business is reporting that 800 feet of the new building will be used by Sanford Health as a acute care clinic, that will offer day, evening and weekend hours, along with same-day appointments.

PAve restaurant and nightclub is also getting a piece of the action. PAve is planning an extension south of its second story with an enclosed 2,800-square-foot space and a 3,200-square-foot rooftop patio, that is sure to become one of Sioux Falls favorite downtown hangouts.

According to SiouxFalls.Business, construction on the new Lewis Drug site has already started.
