April 19th, 2013 marks the first anniversary of the death of Levon Helm, the legendary singer and drummer in The Band.

To mark the day, Ain't in It for My Health, a documentary on Levon that was started five years ago, will open in New York on Friday followed by select theaters around the country. It had his full blessing and cooperation, as well as that of his family and friends. Larry Campbell, Levon's bandleader, says his boss "was coming out of a bad financial period, a bad health period, as he'd already battled cancer once, and we all banded together to help him. And (the film) gives a great sense of his personality and magnetism... There was no pressure, no deadline, and Levon loved being on camera. He was a real natural, as you can see in the movies he did, like Coal Miner's Daughter. So making this film was very much his idea."

Levon succumbed to cancer in a New York City hospital at the age of 71.
