The South Dakota House Taxation Committee voted 10 to 4 Thursday morning to keep the sales tax on food. The bill was HB 1154. The vote was along party lines. Republicans voted to keep the tax. Democrats voted to remove it.

Members of the Governor's staff testified against the bill. Apparently the Governor does not want any changes in the state tax system, even if it can benefit a group in our state which is getting larger, those who have trouble obtaining enough food to feed themselves and their families.

In a radio  conversation with State Representative Bernie Hunhoff, he stated the chances of the bill coming up again this session were almost nil, based on the block vote by the republicans on the committee.
