Landfill ATARI Games Sell For More Than $100K

This story is dedicated to my grandma, the one who first introduced me to the amazing world of video games. The first time I slammed the square box Pitfall cartridge into an Atari console was in her basement.

A lost treasure of Atari game cartridges were dug up in a New Mexico landfill in April 2014 have now sold for more than $100,000. 

This find is another chapter in the legend that Atari had thrown away hundreds of games more than 30 years ago, including E.T. The Extraterrestrial -- which has a reputation as the worst video game ever created -- and more than 60 other titles.

Joe Lewandowski, who dug up the games, told the Alamagordo City Commission that 881 of them were sold on eBay and netted nearly $108,000.

23 games of the games went to museums, including the Smithsonian, and nearly 300 more that aren't on the auction block yet.
