South Dakota has landed on yet another list and like a lot of them lately, this is really no surprise. 24/7 Wall Street's latest compilation of information is about the top beer-drinking states. There is a definite correlation between sparse population and beer consumption, as most of the states in the top ten had very low populations.

Here in South Dakota, each one of us (when averaged out) contributed to drinking more than 38 gallons of beer (on average, according to the latest stats which were from 2013). I highly suspect that several South Dakotans may be drinking more than their fair share resulting in a lower average for the majority of us!

I don't drink a lot of beer, but in the summer I do indulge in my favorite, which is Summer Shandy, a delightful combination of icy cold lemonade and beer! This season Leinenkugel has also come out with a Grapefruit Shandy which is also enjoyable.

Here are the top 5 states where people drink the most beer:

  1. North Dakota
  2. New Hampshire
  3. Montana
  4. South Dakota
  5. Vermont
