Temperatures in the 90's and a heat index in the low 100's kept some people from coming out to Terrace Park in Sioux Falls Sunday (August 25) for Jam Against Hunger 13, but those of us that braved the heat must have upped our donations to make up for those that stayed home as JAH organizer Lauri Koller told me that they set a new record this weekend by raising 17 TONS of food for Feeding South Dakota!

The music started with a new group of veteran Sioux Falls musicians that you likely know from many different bands over the years. The Guilty Pleasures Orchestra is" Brian "Beno" Detmers and Steve Grimes on guitars, Craig "Gumby" Olson on bass, Dick Bartling on drums and Evan Jones on keyboard. The band is covering songs mainly from the 70's and 80's that other cover bands aren't doing and when you hear them on the radio, you can't help but turn it up and sing along like "Turn It On Again" from Genesis, "You May Be Right" from Billy Joel and "Hold The Line" from Toto. Thanks to Spirit Sparks for the video below! it was the GPO's first ever gig.

Oryx was up next. You may have seen them at Automania, Hot Harley Nights or a number of other events around the area this summer. Oryx is a group of teenagers who LOVE 80's rock and cover Guns N' Roses, Poison, Twisted Sister and more.

Sioux Falls hard rockers Driven followed them and opened with a killer metal cover of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" that set the tone for their set that included covers of Metallica and Pantera along with an original. If you like hard rock, go see Driven!

The Jukebox Zeroes headlined the 13th annual event and opened with original song "Pink Jesus" from their In Gratia double CD and included covers of Loverboy and Ram Jam plus an appearance by DK Koller doing some Johnny Cash for the crowd.

Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether dropped by the park to say a few words and to also drop off a $500 check to go with bags and bags of canned and boxed food donated by the sweaty crowd.

A great cause and some great bands, plus a fun day to hang out in Terrace Park with friends and making new one's. I look forward to this event every summer. Mark it on your calendar now for Jam Against Hunger 14 and join the fun.
