GRAND FORKS, ND — North Dakota scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out a 4-3 victory over South Dakota State Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Kraft Memorial Field.

UND improved to 17-18-1 overall with the victory, while the Jackrabbits dropped to 25-16 overall. SDSU also fell to 2-10 this season in one-run games.

The home team broke into the scoring column first, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the second against Jackrabbit starter Joe Erickson. Sam Alt drove in the first run of the frame with a base it and Jacob Threlkald followed with a run-scoring infield single two batters later.

SDSU knotted the game at 2-all in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of unearned runs. Eric Danforth reached on an error with two outs and scored on Al Robbins’ double to right field. Scott Splett plated Robbins with the tying run with a base hit.

UND regained the lead with an unearned run of its own in the home half of the fifth. Taylor Petersen walked and Zack Trygstad reached on an error before Jeff Campbell came through with an RBI single.

The Jackrabbits again drew even with an unearned run in the top of the sixth as Paul Jacobson led off the inning by reaching on an error and later scored on a passed ball following a two-out single by Tyler Shannon.

The game-winning rally in the UND ninth inning began when Patrick Vandoorne walked and Matt Wehrli was hit by a pitch. After Trygstad laid down a sacrifice bunt, Campbell notched his third hit of the game, plating Vandoorne with the winning run.

Threlkeld also tallied three hits for UND, which out-hit the Jacrkabbits, 10-7. Shannon and Aaron Machbitz each had two hits for SDSU.

Brock Johnson earned the victory after pitching four innings of scoreless relief. He gave up two hits and struck out one.

Andrew Clemen took the loss for SDSU after entering the game to start the ninth inning. The Jackrabbits’ four pitchers combined to issue seven walks and struck out only one batter.

The Jackrabbits continue mid-week play Wednesday at Creighton. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
