Immediate and Long Range Impact for New Sioux Falls Overpass
In the early 1990’s, Sioux Falls leaders predicted the arrival of cars numbering in the thousands and dozens of businesses would be built because of a bridge crossing I-229 at Louise Avenue. They were right. So it’s not too much of a stretch that 21 years later a new bridge spanning the same road a half-mile to the west spanning Solberg Avenue on the north and Tallgrass Avenue on the south will do the same.
On a warm, windy day in August, members of the city hierarchy and South Dakota Secretary of Transportation Darin Bergquist witnessed the opening of the structure that will eventually host around 4,500 cars per day. In the near term, Sioux Falls Director of Public Works Mark Cotter says the 57th and Louise intersection will see a reduction of traffic by 10 percent.
Glancing to the future, more development shall arrive as business and residential entities find their way to area. Tallgrass will eventually get an upgrade of pavement to the south and 69th Street gets widened to the east. Those are the sure bets if you wanted to place a marker on the future of that zone. Odds are good for an interchange within 5 years to make an Exit 74 on I-29 to link 85th Street to 271st Street. Beyond that, as Sioux Falls grows, people will go where the roads will take them.
