If It’s Free, It’s For Me! Don’t Pay Website For Help Renewing Driver’s License!

I just realized that the one thing I have to put on my to-do list, is get my driver's license renewed.  When it comes to the things that I hate to do the most....that ranks in the top 5.  I always seem to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at the same time as everyone else, and end up waiting for what seems like an eternity.

As frustrating as the process is to me and many others, a word of caution.  If the thought of going to your computer and finding a website to help you sounds like the perfect option, think twice about paying an internet site for help.

South Dakota's Driver Licensing Program is asking its customers to be cautious of internet sites that charge for assistance with driver licensing services.  Cindy Gerber, the director of the Driver Licensing Program is reminding people that a fee is charged to obtain or renew a South Dakota driver license, but information about the program and staff assistance with questions or problems is provided without charge.

Recently, people have contacted the Driver Licensing Program, saying they were charged a fee by a website for on-line renewal.  Cindy Gerber says,

While the charge is for access to the site and their recommendations on what forms to use from our (South Dakota Driver Licensing Program) site, the person could have gotten that information from us without the charge.

The Driver Licensing Program does charge a $20 fee for a new license or renewal of a license, but information and assistance is free.  Gerber also says that the websites might not be doing anything wrong, but the forms needed and help with those forms are free.

Remember, there should be no charge to get more information and to visit the official Driver Licensing Program site.
