[Update]  I-90 is now open in both Eastbound and Westbound directions across South Dakota, although no travel is still advised in certain areas.

Drivers are reminded that serious winter driving conditions still exist on I-90 and on many highways across the state. Motorists can expect snow packed and slippery areas, possible blowing and drifting snow, and zero to near-zero visibility at times as the expected 40 mph winds pick up.

I-90 is starting to open after a major winter storm closed down the cross-country interstate on December 15, 2015 between Chamberlain and Rapid City.

Beginning on Wednesday December 16, 2015, the South Dakota Department of Transportation will begin to clear and open lanes:

State officials have reopened the WESTBOUND ONLY lanes of Interstate 90 from Wall to Rapid City effective at 8:00 CST.

I-90 Westbound from Chamberlain to Wall remains closed.

I-90 Eastbound from Rapid City to Chamberlain remains closed.

Strong winds of 20-30 mph and gusts up to 40 mph across the state will continue to make travel extremely difficult, especially for semi-trucks and other high-profile vehicles.
