Hawkwind Guitarist Huw Lloyd Langton Dead at 61

Huw Lloyd Langton

The men of Hawkwind will be glad to put 2012 behind them as another longtime member has died. Guitarist Huw Lloyd Langton succumbed to cancer last night (Dec. 6), according to a statement on the band’s website. He was an influential part of the band in the early 70s and throughout the 80s, appearing on 10 of their 25 albums.

“Huw had been bravely fighting cancer for a couple of years, but was determined not to let the battle affect his day to day life,” the statement reads. “He continued to play his guitar, laugh, joke and share the great love he had in his heart, with all who knew him.

”As he wished, he was at home when the time came, with his ever strong and loving wife Marion at his side.”

It was less than five months ago that Langton was speaking on behalf of the band about original bassist John Harrison’s death. Dave Brock remains as the only original member of the space-rock band, who have tour dates listed throughout 2013.

In addition to his work with Hawkwind, the 61-year-old also played guitar for Leo Sayer, played with Widowmaker and formed his own group, the Lloyd-Langton Group. According to his website, he contracted Legionnaires Disease shortly after officially rejoining Hawkwind in 2001. This left him hospitalized during an 18-date British tour that year, and he continued to battle health issues — including broken bones and renal failure — in the years following.

In recent years he’s appeared with Hawkwind or performed as a support act for the band. Funeral arrangments are pending, and expected to be announced at
