Iowa Law Allows Guns for the Legally Blind
People who are legally blind, or completely blind, can now get permits to buy guns in Iowa, The Des Moines Register reports.
Though some states have vision requirements for gun permits, the Iowa law, in place since 2011, has none. Law enforcement officers and even advocates for the disabled can’t agree over whether that’s a good idea.
Officials in Polk County say they’ve issued permits to at least three people who can’t legally drive, and found it difficult or impossible to read the application form.
Some states require vision tests, or conduct target testing.
Blocking visually impaired people from the right to obtain weapon permits would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act. That federal law generally prohibits different treatment based on disabilities
I understand there are ways to teach visually impaired people how to shoot, but if the blind aren’t allowed to drive, is it really a good idea to allow them to carry a weapon?
