Grass Growin Weather

That’s good grass growing weather.  Cool and wet.  That’s one of the things my dad used to say.  He said, ‘Bromegrass loves that cool weather.  You watch, it will be one of the first grasses to get tall and bloom with seed.’  He was right.

There’s been a lot of talk about our recent drought conditions across the Midwest.  I was talking with my neighbor Don last night and we decided that last year, grass and a lot of vegetation never got a chance.

Remember the weather last spring? We were warm EARLY.  Temperatures in the 80’s were the norm during March last year.  This morning, I wore a hooded sweatshirt to work to keep warm.  What a difference a year makes.

The weather experts who spout agricultural knowledge like they are the Hefty Boys from Baltic keep talking about subsoil moisture.  I get that, but you can’t look past what the cool wet weather means to the cattle industry.

Sure we need the additional moisture, but in my opinion the cool ‘damp’ spring that we’ve had is a good start. I like good starts.

Do you have a friend who raises cattle?  Ask them about it.  See what they think.  Sure, we have some dams to fill and creeks to get running again but it’s sure nice to see things greening up again and the grass coming back.  Mother Nature is resilient.

In the meantime, we’ll keep praying for addition rain to ‘catch us up for good.’  If you take a look at the averages over the past 30 years, that should be coming, it’s just a question of when.

Oh, and judging by the picture above, the city folks look like they have some ‘hay to make.’  That is if we can get some sunshine soon.

Do you live on a working cattle operation? How is the grass coming along at your place?  Let me know.
