The fuse has officially been lit to the fireworks season here in South Dakota.

Saturday, June 27 2015 was the first day South Dakota residents could legally buy and start to shoot fireworks in the state for the upcoming Forth of July holiday.

Using fireworks to help celebrate our nations independence was actually the idea of John Adams, who suggested we celebrate with 'lights in the sky.'

This year the forth falls on a weekend, which will make discharging all your Skyrockets, Roman Candles and assorted other items that go boom and light up the night even more fun.

Firework distributors from around the area say the season is off to a bang!

“Firework sales have been really good this year because the fourth is on a Saturday and we've been blessed with so much rain,” said Shelly Raderschadt, owner of Hot Shot Fireworks.

As consumer firework sales boom around the area, Sioux Falls, city officials are urging firework safety for the upcoming patriotic holiday.

Captain Doug Medema, of Sioux Falls Fire Rescue urges users to “Read the directions on the fireworks, keep fireworks on a flat level ground so they cannot tip over, let the adults light the fireworks and avoid any buildings.”

Medema also says in year's past, fireworks have sparked roof and grass fires, resulting in various injuries. With the most common being burns.

Burns from a firework can happen anywhere from the hands to the face to any part of the body, according to Medema.

He reminds anyone who plans on shooting fireworks to take the necessary precautions to ensure you have a successful Forth of July without a visit from your local fire department.

Remember, July 5 is the last day South Dakotans can purchase and shoot off fireworks this Fourth of July season.
