Fire in a second floor apartment in a landmark building in downtown Mitchell forced residents out last night.

Public Safety Chief Lyndon Overweg says firefighters were called around 8:45 PM to the 3-story Woolworth building where fire was burning in a second floor apartment.

"We do have everything knocked down," said Overweg. "There was one animal that was deceased that was found, but no persons were injured that we are aware of. There might be some minor smoke inhalation that was treated right here on the scene, but nothing serious."

Overweg says firefighters pulled down sections of the ceiling and wall to determine if the fire extended beyond the apartment.

The owners of a bridal store on the main floor on the west side of the building removed much of their merchandise to an empty storefront nearby.
