A 21-year old Fort Thompson woman lost her life on I-90 in Sioux Falls shortly after midnight Wednesday (April 2)

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says Nicole Metcalf was eastbound on I90 two miles east of Marion Road when she stopped in the driving (right) lane and got out of her car. A 19-year old woman from Oacoma was also eastbound in the driving lane when she saw Metcalf's car stopped in her lane. She attempted to swerve to avoid hitting the stopped vehicle, but still collided with the back end.

The collision sent the stopped car into the south ditch while Metcalf was thrown to the ground near the median. Metcalf was airlifted to an area hospital where she died early Wednesday.

Metcalf's passenger, 21-year old David Blackmoon of Chamberlain and the driver of the other vehicle, Brittany May, both received minor injuries.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol investigation is continuing as they attempt to find out why Metcalf's car was stopped in the driving lane.
