Our news gathering partner, KDLT is reporting that a family of six in Platte, South Dakota has died in an early -morning house fire Thursday, September 17, 2015.

The superintendent of the Platte-Geddes school district says classes dismissed early after school officials learned of the tragedy.

According to the Mitchell Daily Republic, High School Principal Patrick Frederick said Scott and Nicole Westerhuis, along with their four children, third-grader Kailey, fifth-grader Jaeci, eighth-grader Connor, and sophomore Michael died in the fire.

Platte Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire about 5:40 a.m. The home is completely destroyed, but additions on the residence such as an indoor gym, garage and football field survived.

The school has brought in counselors from other districts to meet with students.
