Falls Park recently was ranked seventh in the list of the top 15 Best City Parks in America by Thrillist.com.

“We are thrilled to receive this unsolicited national honor for our flagship park and city namesake. Our team is dedicated to providing top-notch facilities for the citizens and visitors to enjoy. Receiving this recognition is a great testament to their hard work!” says Don Kearney, Director of Parks and Recreation.

The other parks on the list that ranked higher were in St. Louis, San Diego, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, and New York.

The Falls of the Big Sioux River has been the focal point of the area for centuries. The rushing water and quartzite rock attracted Native Americans, land prospectors, soldiers, and settlers. The park includes some of the first buildings constructed in the city.

Falls Park covers 123 acres in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls. The park includes the Queen Bee Mill, Falls Overlook Café, the Millrace and Dam, Horse Barn, Seney Island, Falls Park Open Air Shelter, Visitor Information Center, and the River Greenway Trail. The park also is home to the Winter Wonderland event, which provides dazzling holiday lights throughout the park from mid-November to mid-January annually.
