Everyone’s Favorite ‘Picker’ Comes To Sioux Falls
Every Monday night at 8pm you tune in to the History Channel and American Pickers to see what Frank, Mike and Dani are finding in a farmhouse in Ohio, to a storage shed in Illinois, to a museum in Murdo, SD. The pickers have become celebrities and one of them came to Sioux Falls this weekend to help us out at the annual Winterfest of Wheels.
Frank Fritz worked for years as a fire and safety inspector, but ‘picking’ has been a way of life for him since he was just a kid, finding cans and signs (two of his favorites even today!). Frank told me that he and Mike have been doing this together for almost a quarter century and that it was Mike that really made the push to get on TV.
“Mike tried for about five years, shopping our story to different networks” Frank says. “We were told over and over that the networks just couldn’t figure out who would want to watch what we do”
Perseverance paid off as the History Channel finally bit about five years ago and the rest, as they say, is history. Frank and Mike go off around the country looking for that ‘honeyhole’, that big score, and all the interesting people that go along with it, and they’ve become a bog hit.
I asked Frank why he came to Winterfest of Wheels, and he said the charity (Cure Kids Cancer at Sanford Children’s Hospital) is close to his heart because of the kids and also because of his battle. Frank is battling colon cancer.
Frank said he knows what it’s like to be in and out of hospital’s with his cancer fight and his dealing with Crohn’s disease. He says it’s something he hates to see kids have to go through so if he can help raise money for the charity, he’s in.
Winterfest of Wheels continues today (Sunday February 10) at the Sioux Falls Convention Center until 4pm. Admission is $9 and all proceeds benefit Cure Kids Cancer here in Sioux Falls. Frank is already on his way back home, but you can still check out well over 100 amazing vehicles, plus the Ditch Your Man Room , Little Cruisers area and more.
Tonight on History Channel, it’s a repeat of one of the guys most popular episodes, “The Haunted Honeyhole”. And tune in tomorrow for an all-new episode. Click here for more on the American Pickers.
