A 68-year-old Sioux Falls woman was suckered out of more than 1000 dollars recently after falling victim to an email check scam.

The woman received a $1500 check in the mail shortly after getting an email from someone asking for help. She then wired the person who sent the check $1500, only one problem, she didn't allow the check she received to clear the bank first.

The woman called police immediately upon discovering the whole thing was a scam after her account was showing up with a negative balance.

According to officer Sam Clemens with the Sioux Falls Police Department, "The story behind it varies but essentially they want the victim to cash and then wire money right away. Obviously, they know it's a bad check."

The checks used in these email check scam stunts often times look very real. That's why police suggest you always call your bank first, to make sure the check is indeed legitimate.
