Police say a woman facing DUI charges drove across lower Sherman Park, crashing into the Pergola and narrowly missed the bust of Mr. Sherman at 1:37 AM on Sunday August 7, 2016. According to Sergeant Adam Petersen with the Sioux Falls Police Department two passengers fled, while the driver remained pinned inside:

On August 7, 2016 at 0137 officers of the Sioux Falls Police Department responded to 1001 W. 11th Street for a report of a weapons violation.  When they arrived they discovered that an employee of Lalibela’s Restaurant had observed a dispute outside and attempted to intervene.  When he did this the male displayed a pistol and threatened the staff member.  The suspect then left the scene in a vehicle that was described to officers.  As they interviewed him the suspect vehicle drove by and the officers saw it.  They attempted to stop it and the vehicle fled from them.  They engaged it in a vehicle pursuit and it lost control and crashed at Indian Mound Place and Kiwanis Avenue.  It drove off the roadway and into Lower Sherman Park where it collided with the pergola by the bust of Mr. Sherman.  Two male occupants of the vehicle fled on foot and were apprehended a short distance away.

The woman driver who was trapped behind the wheel was extricated and taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.  The pergola need to be braced immediately to keep it from collapsing.

Sergent Petersen listed those involved and their charges:

Theresa Highpipe, 24 of Sioux Falls for Aggravated Eluding, DWI 1st and no Driver’s License

Daniel Amador, 19 of Sioux Falls for Aggravated Assault and Fleeing Police
