What began as a report of a car-pedestrian crash turned into an assault case in Sioux Falls on Tuesday evening.

Police say they were called at 7:19 p.m. to the 400 block of West 12th Street, but while they were en route they learned the vehicle driver may have struck the pedestrian on purpose.

The suspect was gone, but police say he turned himself in at the front desk of the Law Enforcement Center.

Police say the driver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and aggravated assault, but his name has not been released.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital with injuries police describe as serious.
