Dr. Brian Maher Named Sioux Falls School Superintendent
From a pool of candidates primarily of Midwestern stock, a native Nebraskan will be the next Superintendent of the Sioux Falls School District. Dr. Brian Maher who spent the last eight years in the Kearney School District will take over for Dr. Pam Homan who is retiring.
Maher is a native of Hooper, Nebraska which is north of Omaha. Before taking the position in Kearney he was Superintendent of Schools in Centennial, Nebraska. Maher’s background also includes time as a principal, assistant principal, athletic director, teacher and coach.
Kent Alberty as Chair of the Sioux Falls School Board feels that Maher’s overall education goal made him stand out.
“He believes that every student should be given the opportunity to rise to level of accomplishment they desire.”
After conducting a nationwide search, the field was whittled down to six candidates. Five of those prospects came to Sioux Falls for an interview.
One South Dakotan made the final cut along with a Minnesotan, Iowan and Missourian. Even though the final contract has not been drawn, Alberty says the compensation package will be similar to what Dr. Homan is currently making.
Dr. Maher will begin his role as Superintendent of Schools starting in July. Comparatively, the number of children Dr. Maher will oversee compared to his current position will more than quadruple.
