While there is no nuclear power plant in Springfield, South Dakota (does a medium security prison count?), other evidence suggests that the long-running and popular TV cartoon The Simpsons is set in the small South Dakota town on the Missouri River.

The Onion's A.V. Club provides the evidence:

There’s also some proof that it’s in South Dakota, based on the fact that Rep. Bob Arnold—the crooked congressman in “Ms. Lisa Goes To Washington”—evidently had both Springfield Forest and Mt. Rushmore in his district.

And certainly, South Dakota would never have any corrupt politicians like Rep. Bob Arnold!

But still. . .

Like South Dakotans, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie are the perfectly imperfect "nuclear" family we Dakotans cherish.  The Simpson's Springfield is dominated by one wealthy Montgomery Burns, sort of like South Dakota is dominated by one wealthy T. Denny Sanford. And doesn't Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether sound a lot like Mayor Quimby? Ok, not so much.

On the other hand, there are 34 other Springfields across the U.S.A. tochoosefrom. But maybe Springfield, South Dakota could build a Simpson's inspired Springfield, ala The Flintstone's Bedrock in Custer, South Dakota?

I say Springfield should find Joop Bollen and get some Chinese investors to make the Simpson's home right here in the Mount Rushmore State. And we love Chinese investors in South Dakota and EB-5!

Doh!
