Anyone who has lived with a dog knows that dogs smell. They smell like dogs. Keeping your dog clean is a daunting task. But according to new research, your pets feet may actually smell like popcorn! Crazy I know.

American Author Bill Bryson who wrote a popular science book called, A Short History of Nearly Everythingsays the skin of most animals is home to a lot of microbes. There are particular bacteria called Proteus or Pseudomonas that emanate from their paws and give off a yeasty, snacky smell.

According to an article in Mental Floss magazine:

All these microorganisms emit their own distinct odors (they're what give us BO), and the popcorn/corn chip smell on some dogs' feet could be due to yeast or Proteus bacteria. Both are known for their sweet, corn tortilla–like smell. Or it could be Pseudomonas bacteria, which smell a little fruitier—but pretty close to popcorn to most noses.

If the smell is overwhelming, it could be a sign of an infection and you should get it checked out by your veterinarian.
