According to the latest statistics, 90% of American adults own a cell phone and 58% of us carry a smartphone. Those numbers jump to 98% of 18-29 year-olds and even 84% of people making under $30,000 a year.

That last statistic is important, because when they first cell phone came on the market 30 years ago, it was targeted to the VERY rich. Why? Because it cost $3995!

The phone was a handheld model called the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X . Weighing in at nearly two pounds, the 8000X was so big, its creators even nicknamed it “The Brick.” And, the battery lasted just a half an hour.

So even if you had one of these monsters, you had to talk fast.

So when you're deciding on that new iPhone or S5 that costs about $500, but has 4G speed, connects you with the world, has a 24 hour battery, and fits in your pocket, remember, the world was a MUCH different place 30 years ago.

And don't even make me bring up the bag phone!
