Renewing a South Dakota driver’s license is somewhat difficult because more documentation is needed. However, the state now offers a convenient option when it’s time to pay.

South Dakota driver license exam stations will now accept Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Discover credit and debit cards.  According to the Department of Public Safety which administers driver licensing, the service was activated this month.

In a press release Driver Licensing Program director Jane Schrank says, "It is another way we can provide customer-friendly service to people. While the stations still will accept cash, checks and money orders, we also know many people like to use credit or debit cards for payment."

Let’s not overlook that the convenience comes with a cost. Schrank says there is a $2 fee per debit card transaction. For credit card transactions, there is a fee of $2 or 2.95%, whichever is greater.

The availability for the credit or debit card payment option will apply for all state exam stations. There are a few city or county sites that issue driver licenses on behalf of the state. It’s possible those satellite locations may not be set up to take credit cards.
