While the Keystone XL pipeline has received most of the public and press attention in South Dakota, there’s another crude oil line that may be crossing the state—the Dakota Access pipeline.

Governor Dennis Daugaard appointed State Treasurer Rich Sattgast earlier this year as an acting Public Utilities Commissioner on the matter as PUC commissioner Kristie Fiegen has a conflict.Sattgastsays the line, which will go from theBakkenrange in North Dakota, across South Dakota and Iowa to Illinois, is a big project.

“It will range anywhere up and down the line from what I’ve been reading from 12 inches to 30 inches,” Sattgast said. “And it will process anywhere from 450,000, barrels of oilto570,000, I think is what they’re saying.”

“Anyone can come to the public meetings and make their comments known,” Sattgast said. “And they can put themselves out on the docket for official comments.”

Sattgastsaid the commission hopes to make a decision on the pipeline by Dec. 15. To participate in the public comments, go to puc.sd.gov.

Sattgast made his comments Wednesday from Pierre on KSOO’s Viewpoint University.
