If you rely on Sioux Falls public transportation to get around, you might need to bring along a little extra bus money soon.

Believe it or not, bus fares in the city haven't increased in 20 years, but a Public Transit Task Force appointed by the Sioux Falls City Council thinks it's time for a hike.

The task force is proposing to increase single bus ride fares from $1.00 to $1.50 and a weekly pass from $10.00 to $12.50.

The proposal would also increase paratransit rides from $2.00 to $3.00.

Without some sort of increase the transit board believes it will be difficult to continue expanding transportation services and routes in the city.

Sam Trebilcock,Transportation Planner said, "We would expect about $110,000 starting next year and over the course of time we would expect that would grow to about somewhere in that $200,000 to $250,000 a year range."

The Public Transportation Advisory Board will give their recommendation to the Sioux Falls city council, which will eventually take the matter to a vote.
