Projections for large attendance figures at the 75th Anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally are proving accurate. The one million mark might be within reach.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation has been tracking vehicle movement coming into Sturgis during the rally since 1990. Figures show that numbers are up sharply from one year ago.

Pre-event traffic numbers from 2015 are at least 20 thousand vehicles per day higher than 2014. The following breakdown tells the story.

2014 Friday, Aug 1: 43,259
2015 Friday, July 31: 63,712

2014 Saturday, Aug 2: 59,810
2015 Saturday, Aug 1: 82,267

2014 Sunday, Aug 3: 69,888
2015 Sunday, Aug 2: 90,304

South Dakota DOT lists the largest traffic count on record as 96,612 vehicles that entered Sturgis on August 4, 2003. Looking back, that was Monday of Rally Week during the 63rd installment.

As a value of percentage, this year’s traffic count is up by 37 percent from one year ago. The largest attendance on record was in 2000 when there were an estimated 633,000 who came to the 60th anniversary of the event.
