City of Sioux Falls Expects Another Strong Year in Construction, Development

According to the City of Sioux Falls building construction set records in 2013. Now city officials are expecting similar results in 2014.  And the reason behind the positive outlook is an increase in the city's population.

“While I’m not going to guarantee another year with new building permit records, 2014 is starting out strong, and it’s only January,” says Mike Cooper, Director of Planning and Building Services. “About 3,500 new people moved to Sioux Falls in 2013, and that is driving the need for additional housing and services. The people are coming here because our economy and job market are so robust.”

Building activity already is slated to take on many different forms in 2014. Public buildings, such as a museum archive facility and an additional fire station in the northwest part of town, will begin construction this year, and the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center will open this fall. Nine public schools also will be built, added onto, or renovated in 2014. New hotels, convenience stores, retail stores, and office buildings are in the works. Health care building will pick up again in 2014, and more multifamily housing will take shape this year.

“Development across the city, both public and private, will once again be strong and diverse,” states Darrin Smith, Director of Community Development. “The northwest with the new Sports and Entertainment District will dramatically change, along with continued steady development in the south and east portions of our city, in addition to downtown Sioux Falls, which will continue to evolve in a significant way with some big projects taking place in 2014.”
