UPDATE: Sioux Falls Lutheran School's Board and Administration used the results of a survey completed by parents, faculty and staff to help shape their calendar for the 2015-16 school year.

Kindergarten through 8th grade at SFLS will begin classes on Wednesday August 26, 2015 with the final day being Tuesday May 24, 2016. Factors involved in shaping the schedule include End-of-Course Exams for high school credit taken by 8th grade students for high school credit, the recent survey and alignment with Lutheran High School of Sioux Falls which will begin on August 17, 2015.

Voters chose to reject the decision of the Sioux Falls School Board to start the academic calendar in August for the next three years. By law, the Tuesday following the first Monday in September will be when the kids are back in class.

This action will affect students in the public school system. However, private schools in Sioux Falls are at liberty to set their own starting date regardless of the results at the ballot box.

As evidence, Sioux Falls Catholic Schools posted on their Facebook page what their plans will be for this Fall.

Sioux Falls Christian Schools will also be starting in August this year. According to their Preliminary 2015-16 School Calendar on their website their first day of school will be August 19.

Sioux Falls Lutheran School Administrator Tia Esser says a few factors will shape the decision on the upcoming start date. “We plan to conduct a poll because we want parents to let us know their feelings on when the new calendar begins. I’m driving a VW Bug, not the Titanic, so we are able to more quickly respond to our school families’ needs going forward.”

Even though Esser and the SFLS Board value the opinions of what the families want, other factors must be considered. “Because of our relationship with the Lutheran High School, we do share some staff between the two schools. Therefore, we will consider the poll results as a guide during this process and then with all things considered, make necessary adjustments.”
