Autumn means the harvest of crops and orange barrels as a major Sioux Falls street project reaches completion ahead of schedule.

All lanes are officially open on 12th Street on the bridge near Grange Avenue more than six weeks before the deadline of November 11 according to the contract with the city. The contractor will be able to reap financial incentives as a result which commonly happens with street construction. In a press release, the City says the project was substantially complete on Thursday, September 29, 2016.

A year ago, the City was unable to get an acceptable bid on the project, so some preparation work was done in advance. The 2016 construction schedule began in late March with the bridge torn down in phases which started in May.

“West 12th Street is one of the most traveled roads in all of the city, with 21,400 cars a day using this bridge. The project replaced a major and important piece of infrastructure, which was reconstructed and reopened to traffic 43 days ahead of the completion date,” says Chad Huwe, City Engineer. “Thank you to the businesses and property owners along West 12th Street and the traveling public for their patience during construction and to D & G for their diligence in this project.”

The meat and potatoes of the incentive payment means that D & G Concrete Construction Inc. of Sioux Falls, earned an incentive payment of $300,000 for the early completion of the $7.4 million project. Additionally, miscellaneous work will continue along the project over the coming weeks as minor cleanup and project restoration items remain.
