Sioux Falls Fire Marshall Dean Lanier urges residents to check their smoke alarms and replace the batteries when they change their clocks to Daylight Savings Time this weekend.

"We should be making sure that all of our smoke alarms inside our homes are still working.  Simply checking the battery by pushing the button is the best way to ensure that they are still operating."

Dean says the bottom line is this: smoke alarms save lives!

"Every year in the United States, we have about 3 thousand deaths associated with fire. Most of them are attributed to a lack of smoke alarms working inside the home."

Dean says Sioux Falls Fire Rescue will provide smoke alarms and batteries to residents.  The number to call is 367 8093 or drop by one of the fire stations.
