Channing Tatum Turns Away From Acting To Direct
2012 was the Year of the Channing Tatum (and rightfully so – dude was brilliant across the board). He starred in ‘Magic Mike,’ ‘21 Jump Street,’ ‘The Vow’ and ‘Haywire’ (and would’ve starred in ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘ had that film not been pushed back a year). He was named People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” and Entertainment Weekly called him one of the “Entertainer of the Year.” But all that could be coming to a close as Tatum is looking to take a break and focus on the next phase of his career: directing.
Tatum told Entertainment Weekly‘ that – while he’s not exactly retiring – he would like to take some time off from his busy acting schedule and work on the next “section” of his career. Here he explains the plans he and his partner Reid Carolin (producing partner…) have for the near future:
By the end of next year, we’re going to shut things down and write the first thing that we’re going to direct. We’re going to be like, alright, no more acting parts for a minute, let’s take a few and really get caring about that section of our career.
Tatum says that ‘Magic Mike’ really was the inspiration behind his newfound interest in becoming a director. Though neither he nor Carolin have any experience directing, they’re looking to make their debut in the next year or so, potentially with ‘Magic Mike 2‘ (although starring in your directorial debut seems like an ambitious proposal).
Before you get too bummed out, Tatum has been busy and still has the aforementioned ‘G.I. Joe’ sequel in 2013 plus ‘Side Effects‘ (again with ‘Magic Mike’ director Steven Soderbergh), ‘White House Down‘ and ‘Foxcatcher’ with Steve Carell. And then in 2014, there’s ‘21 Jump Street 2‘ and ‘Jupiter Ascending‘ so…you know, there’s still plenty of Channing Tatum to go around.
