City officials are predicting a record for building permits in Sioux Falls for 2013.

There is a lot more to this story, but here are some of the basics:

Planning and Building Services Director Mike Cooper says the value of building permits issued by the city this year is up to nearly $447 million, well over the $300.5 million issued at this time last year.

The totals include nearly 1,600 new housing units and six projects valued at $10 million or more, with four of them either supported or recruited by the city.

And the biggest-ticket item, the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, is down for $32.2 million in permits this year, but that's only part of the $447 million total issued for the year so far.

Community Development Director Darrin Smith puts it this way:  "We have been very aggressive and forward-thinking these past three years in particular, and we are seeing the fruits of that labor now and will continue to."

And so it grows.
