Springsteen’s ‘Atlantic City’ Covered by Country Stars
Top-selling country duo Sugarland have been recently uploading highlights from their 2012 ‘In Your Hands’ tour to their official YouTube channel. On Friday (Jan. 18) they put up a cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s ‘Atlantic City,’ which was originally released on his 1982 acoustic album, ‘Nebraska.’
Although it’s given a full arrangement, their rendition — with Kristian Bush taking the lead vocals instead of Jennifer Nettles – isn’t too dissimilar from the way Springsteen has been playing it with the E Street Band since their 1999 reunion. It’s a little faster with an extended instrumental break, and the mandolin part is replaced here by electric guitar. But it otherwise maintains a lot of the same properties.
“‘Nebraska’ was my first Springsteen album, and ‘Atlantic City’ was the first Bruce song I ever learned,” Bush said. “I loved it from the moment I heard it, and am reminded every time I play it that a great song is a combination of a great story and a compelling performance. It was an acoustic version on his album, haunting and true, and I love interpreting it as a giant country rock song.”
Sugarland shows further solidarity with Springsteen by asking fans to help rebuild the Jersey Shore following Hurricane Sandy through donations to the New Jersey Relief Fund.
