Brandon Valley Downs Patriots to Reach State Tournament

Brandon Valley knows that senior shooter Chase Marso will get it his points, but to the tune of 16 points in the first quarter off four three-pointers?

Even his coach Brent Deckert was impressed by how fast a start Marso got in the Lynx 71-43 drubbing of the Lincoln Patriots Friday night in the District 2AA boys championship game at Brandon. The win advances Brandon Valley to the Class AA State Tournament in two weeks in Sioux Falls.

“I can’t say enough good things about him,” said Deckert.”I know he is going to Augie to play football, but if doesn’t have a division two or division one jump shot, I’ve never seen one.”

Marso finished his home career in style collecting 30 points. But wait. Junior guard Nic Peterson got into the act too, with 25 points. It was infectious shooting. Lincoln could do nothing to stop it. Marso had six three’s and Peterson had five.

Many on the floor after the game said Brandon Valley could have beaten anyone in the state with that range and accuracy of shooting. Brandon Valley hit 12 treys in the first three quarters. Then wrapped up the game in the fourth by canning 12-of-12 free throws.

“We’ve seen a shooting display like this in practice more than once but we haven’t done it in a game where Chase and Nic combo off each other over and over,” said Deckert.

Brandon Valley was really bad rebounding against Washington in the district opener Tuesday. So the Lynx used the two days to prepare for Lincoln with rebounding drills.

“We said, if you are not going to block out, you are going to run,” said Deckert. The Lynx got the message loud and clear keeping Lincoln off the offensive glass most of the night.

The Lynx have won seven in a row and won key battles in the Friday night state tournament berth game.

Brandon Valley defended the Lincoln “bigs” holding them to 20 points among three players. The Lynx, who failed to make the tournament field last year, also handled the Lincoln pressure. Part of that was due to Nermin Krdzalic and Adam Jaros sitting on the bench in foul trouble. Krdzalic had nine points on two field goals and Jaros was scoreless.

Lincoln will host Watertown in the regional qualifier Tuesday night for one last chance at the state tournament.
