Beware Of The Ground Around Your Home. Your Basement Could Flood This Year.
It’s great to have our temperatures back to human like conditions. A nice warm up this week included three days at or near 60 degrees.
But just because the outside temperature is nice, it doesn’t mean the ground has warmed up that quick also. Due to the long, brutally cold winter, the ground froze much deeper than it normally would.
And that could be a concern for flooding in areas such as basements.
In South Dakota, the ground froze down to near two feet in the Sioux Falls area and reached 30 to 40 inches moving north of Interstate 90.
National Weather Service hydrologist Mike Gillispie says, ‘When soil is frozen, any snow melt or rain has a hard time finding someplace to go.’
