VERMILLION, SD — University of South Dakota assistant football coach Marquice Williams has been selected to participate in the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship and will spend part of this summer with the Chicago Bears at their training camp in Bourbonnais, Ill. Williams is one of five participants selected by the Bears.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to develop as a coach and learn as much as I can from some of the best in the game,” said Williams. “I look forward to taking what I learn from the Bears’ staff and bringing it back to USD to share with our team.”

The Fellowship program has mentored more than 1,500 minority coaches since it was established in 1987. Those who have completed the program include current NFL head coaches Marvin Lewis (Cincinnati), Leslie Frazier (Minnesota) and Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh). The list also includes former head coaches Tony Dungy (Indianapolis) and Lovie Smith (Chicago).

The program’s objective is to use NFL Clubs’ training camps, offseason workout programs and minicamps to give talented minority coaches opportunities to observe, participate and gain experience while striving to obtain a full-time NFL coaching position.

“This is a great opportunity for Marquice to gain experience with a professional football team,” said USD head football coach Joe Glenn. “He will learn a lot and will be able to share his knowledge with our players and coaches.”

Williams is the outside linebackers coach at USD and also organizes the team’s community service projects. He was an assistant coach at Central Oklahoma and Winona State prior to arriving in Vermillion. He played collegiately at University of Mary where he was an all-conference and all-region defensive back.

With the Bears, Williams will work closely alongside assistant head coach and special team’s coordinator Joe DeCamillis. He will also be on staff for Family Day at Soldier Field in Chicago, an opportunity for fans to meet the 2013 team.
