Eric Noyes, Avera Certified Nurse in Sioux Falls, says the flu season is at its peak!

“It looks like we are. Hopefully, we are at the peak and maybe just a little bit over. The flu season usually lasts about 13 weeks when we track our data. We should be right in the very mist of it right now.”

Eric says there are things to do to protect your self from the flu.

“Of course get your flu shot. It’s not too late to do that. You can still get benefits from the shot. There is enough flu season left. It certainly would make a difference for you.”

“Everyday we suggest you take steps to prevent the spread of germs. If you’re sick, stay home so you don’t expose other people. Wash your hands at all times whether or not you are sick. Clean your hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rub. Beware of sharing glasses and things that would spread respiratory droplets.”

Here are more tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  1. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  2. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs can spread when an individual
touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

The flu can wind up sending people to the hospital and a small number have died.

Historically, season flu causes between three thousand to forty nine thousand deaths in the United States each year.
