The San Diego Padres are seemingly following the model of the Florida Marlins from 1997, 2003 and 2013.

Now in two of those three years, 1997 and 2003, the Marlins were able to win a World Series.  The other year, 2013, it was a different story.

Regardless of the outcome those years, the model set in place by management and ownership of the Marlins was to spend, spend big and go for it all that particular year.

The San Diego Padres apparently were taking notes and have tried to recreate the success of 1997 and 2003 of the Marlins down there in southern California with the moves they have made this off season.

Look at these key additions:

- LF Justin Upton
- CF Will Myers
- RF Matt Kemp
- 3rd base Will Middlebrooks
- C Derek Norris
- P James Shields

So essentially, the Padres have revamped over 50% of the starting defense accompanied with the most recent addition of Big Game James Shields.

It's not just the roster moves that are similar to that of the Florida Marlins.

The market is similar and the attendance is similar when there isn't a winning product on the field.

Both Miami and San Diego are NFL driven markets, yet when the Marlins were right and when the Padres have been right, they have seen a big jump in ballpark revenue and ticket sales.

In addition, I think that the Padres will also follow the footsteps of the Marlins in this aspect as well.  Whether it works or not, a firesale will be on the horizon.

If the Padres fail, then sell off all the assets you obtained this off season and start over.

If you succeed, hold a parade for the World Series title and then do the fire sale.  Either way, you are covered financially and in the court of public opinion at least you tried.

The 2015 San Diego Padres will have a lot more eyes on them than the 2014 Padres did, we'll see if that added attention and added talent will equal more wins in 2015 than in 2014 as well.
