A fire on the third floor of an apartment building in the 4200 block of East 12th Street was quickly extinguished just after 3:00 PM on Monday April 18, 2016.

All renters were able to safely exit the building without injuries before the fire department arrived.  A second unit was called in for assistance.

According to Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, the blaze was extinguished within seven minutes of arrival.

Although the apartment unit where the fire originated sustained heavy damage, surrounding units had little damage after the smoke was cleared.

The Red Cross says the fire originated from the kitchen and authorities are issuing a reminder to all residents to never leaving a stove or oven in use unattended.
Sioux Falls fire rescue is also suggesting having a lid nearby to quickly extinguish grease fires.

The Red Cross says caseworkers are in touch with renters of the units to assess their needs for food, clothing, shelter and other assistance.
