Crime is on the rise in Aberdeen, South Dakota. So much so, it has caused the city to open an additional police office.

The city of Aberdeen, has elected to open a satellite office in a former mall.

According to Aberdeen Police Chief Dave McNeil, by opening the second police office, the hope is communication between law enforcement and residents will improve. Especially between law enforcement and the Somali community living in the area.

Following, a July 8, 2016, shooting, conversations with area residents started about opening up a satellite office in the city. McNeil reached out to translators, with Lutheran Social Services in Sioux Falls and asked them to travel to Aberdeen, to speak with residents.

The idea worked, as large groups of people participated in those meetings.

Aberdeen has seen three shootings in recent months. Just last week, several bullets were fired at an apartment complex in the city.
