ABC Has a Supernatural Drama in ‘The Returned’
ABC hasn’t had a tremendous amount of luck with the supernatural genre of late, but by gum, they’re going to try again. Following the recent cancellation of ‘666 Park Avenue,’ and the even-more-recent scrap of ‘Weird Desk” based on thematic similarities to the upcoming ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ TV series, ABC’s next effort will bring the dead back to life with ‘The Returned.’ The project, produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, is based on a novel by Jason Mott, but will ABC manage to make ‘The Returned’ stay?
When your plans for a high-profile sci-fi drama get scrapped, you go to Plan B…literally. According to Deadline, ABC has taken to Plan B entertainment to craft upcoming drama ‘The Returned,’ replacing their aborted effort ‘Weird Desk.’ Based on a novel by Jason Mott, ‘The Returned’ centers on a Midwestern town where the dead return to change the lives of those they left behind.
‘The Returned’ comes as the latest from a wave of supernatural dramas that ABC has attempted to get off the ground, most recently with ‘Weird Desk,’ and previously with ‘666 Park Avenue,’ and even ‘The River.’ Aaron Zelman, whose previous credits include ‘The Killing‘ and ‘Damages,’ will serve as writer and executive producer on ‘The Returned.’ JoAnn Alfano and Jon Liebman will executive produce while Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will do the same for Plan B Entertainment.
What say you? Could ABC finally land a hit with ‘The Returned,’ or will this one end up on the shelf too?
