A new year is a good opportunity to take a look back. Ten years ago it was 2007. The Colts won the Super Bowl, Britney shaved her head, Rickrolling was invented and the Plain White T's sang “Hey There Delia.” For Sioux Falls, you could call 2007 the first year of modern Sioux Falls.

  • Sioux Falls' population in 2007 was about 151,761, in 2017 it’s 178,500.
  • The big news in 2007 for Sioux Falls was the start of the Sanford era. In February of 2007 it was announced that Sioux Falls billionaire T. Denny Sanford would give $400 million dollars to the former Sioux Valley Hospitals and $16 million to build the Sanford Children’s Hospital. Sanford also gave money to the Homestake mine in the Black Hills, state universities and the Crazy House Memorial in 2007.
  • A little more than a year after the Zip Feed Tower came down (eventually) the six story office building called Cherapa Place opened on the location. The new building spurred the current Eastbank development in downtown Sioux Falls.
  • A new era of Hy-Vee started in Sioux Falls with the opening of the new, big store on south Minnesota Ave. Also, PetSmart and Shoe Carnival both opened on South Louise Avenue.
  • The Sioux Falls Skyforce basketball team finished their first season in the D-League with a loss in the division finals against the Dakota Wizards 115–113.
  • Stampede hockey team won its first Stanley Cup.
  • On August 4, 2007, the Storm defeated Lexington once more for the second United Bowl in a row, 62-59.
  • Sioux Falls Spitfire suspended operations. The Spitfire was soccer team that played at McEneaney Field at O’Gorman High School. They were a part of United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League.
